“Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope.” – Bill Cosby
My kids and I were recently shopping for Father’s Day gifts for my husband and father in preparation for the annual Tribute to Dad, when my youngest asked when Father’s Day became a holiday. “Every day should be Father’s Day,” he quipped. (Leave it to my boy to state that one. Perhaps he’s heard me say “Every day should be Mother’s Day?” Hmmm…)
I had no idea.
Of course, Father’s Day is every day. If you are a dad, you know the feeling. It’s the surge of happiness and love you feel when your child rushes to greet you as you walk through the door in the evening, or when you hear a simple “I love you, Dad.” But thanks to Sonora Dodd, we do have a national observance of Father’s Day to give us an extra opportunity to express love and respect for our fathers.
Ms Sonora Dodd, a loving daughter from Spokane, WA, came up with the idea of celebrating Father’s Day. Her father, Henry Jackson Smart, single-handedly raised Sonora and five of her siblings after her mother died during childbirth. After Sonora attended a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909, she thought that if there was a day to honor mothers, there should also be a day to honor fathers. Sonora worked relentlessly for years to ensure that the idea of Father’s Day became a reality. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge first recognized Father’s Day. And in 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June.
So just in case you haven’t yet found the perfect gift for your father/husband/grandfather, or anyone else you’re celebrating this weekend (you have a few days left!), we’ve got a couple of ideas that will give your Dad a fresh & colorful (ahem) perSPECtive this summer:
For the active, outdoorsy dad who spends his weekends on the golf course or boat, check out IZOD performX-518! He’ll love this clean design, featuring a memory metal bridge and temples for greater durability and flexibility. With its sleek, aerodynamic-like front, colorful rubber sleeves and contoured end pieces, PFX-518 has an “in-motion” feel.
Maybe your dad is that “All American” kind of guy with a classic sense of style. He’ll love IZOD 421, a contemporary frame designed with lightweight, hypoallergenic titanium. Its modified square eye shape and flat metal brow are accented by colorful temple tips, inspired by the brand’s youthful sportswear.
Happy Father’s Day!
